Reviewing Web 2.0

December 20, 2006 · 1 Comment

Tim O’Reilly wrote this article (see link below) a year ago to clarify the meaning of this buzz word Web 2.0.  I thought this would be a good time to bring up this topic again as there seem to have some confusion as to what Web 2.0 really is.

Wikipedia gives a fairly clear definition in a neat sentence. “second generation of Internet-based services—such as social networking sites, wikis, communication tools, and folksonomies—that emphasize online collaboration and sharing among user” (Wiki:web 2.0)

Web 2.0 is really just a natural progression of the internet as a result of greater computing and bandwidth  capacity.

Take a look at the chart, it clearly shows that web 2.0 really picks up steam after the second half of 2005. Looking at the lower pane, you will see the number of times web 2.0 mentioned in news have increased as well during the period.

The O’Reilly chart belows gives a visual interpretation of what the Web 2.0 could be.

Web 2.0

In the O’Reilly article, he gives some really good examples of the Web 2.0.

  • Netscape and Google
  • Doubleclick ad network and Pay-Per-Click ads (Google and Yahoo!)
  • Akamai vs. Bit Torrent

In the same article, you’ll find a summary of the 8-point guide to design your websites for Web 2.0.

Web 2.0 Design Patterns

1. The Long Tail – Small sites or end-users make up the bulk of the internet’s content

2. Data is the Next Intel Inside - For competitive advantage, seek to own a unique, hard-to-recreate source of data.

3. Users Add Value – …the extent to which users add their own data to that which you provide…users [...] add value to your application.

4. Network Effects by Default – Only a small percentage of users will go to the trouble of adding value to your application.

5. Some Rights Reserved. – Allow your users to share your applications and information.

6. The Perpetual Beta – …applications are no longer software artifacts, they are ongoing services.

7. Cooperate, Don’t Control – Web 2.0 applications are built of a network of cooperating data services.

8. Software Above the Level of a Single Device - Design your application from the get-go to integrate services across handheld devices, PCs, and internet servers.

An interesting of the web 2.0 is how quickly web applications or business can change. On a dime, what was the leader is no longer today. Any firms who can stay ahead of the web curve will give them a shot at becoming the leader tomorrow.
